Frequently Asked Questions

What are your teaching methods?

I believe in a personalised approach - tailoring each lesson to an individual's learning style and goals.  I utilise the mainstays of traditional teaching repertoire and methodology including aural training, music theory, musicianship, scales and reading.  Variety is important, and I encourage and help my students to access the musical styles they most enjoy.

Do you offer online lessons?

Yes, I offer online lessons via Zoom or Teams for individuals where this is preferred.  Lessons are held weekly on a regular basis to ensure continuity and effectiveness.

Do I have to sit music exams?

No, not at all.  There are various pathways to learning, but having a structured approach regardless of whether you choose to take exams will help provide the motivation for progress.  The key is to feel a sense of achievement and enjoyment through making music.

What is your cancellation policy?

It is expected that students commit to regular lessons as set out in the Agreement for Music Tuition.  A cancelled lesson due to a family or other emergency can be either rescheduled or refunded at the discretion of the teacher.

I'm an adult wanting to learn from scratch. Is it too late?

It's never too late.  I've taught many adults including complete beginners. We can work at your speed and incorprate your aims.  Many people find music and playing therapeutic, good for the brain and coordination not to mention the soul.

Do I have to study music theory?

Aspects of music theory will be naturally woven into your lessons and it's a good idea to dedicate some time each week to music theory.  For younger learners this can be done through incorporating fun and engaging learning resources, while some students prefer to study music theory as a separate subject.

Do I need my own piano at home?

Access to an instrument for the purpose of regular practice is vital.  A weighted, full size and touch sensitive keyboard with sustaining pedal would be fine too.  Please ask for further guidance if needed.

How often do I need to practice?

Regular and focussed practice even in short bursts is the key to making satisfying progress and achieving your goals.  You'll be offered more detailed advice about effective practice and provided with tools to help organise your practice.
